Jean Impey    www.SewJean.com
I have always made art and worked with my hands creating pieces and things from others bits and pieces making something new and unique, my desire to make things that others hadn’t or couldn’t.  I suspect this came from my mother sewing my wardrobe until I was about 9 years old.   My mother had great technique and a good eye and I found others wanted outfits just like mine.  At 9, I took over sewing, combining patterns and fabrics – making my clothes unique and something that no one else would have, but good enough that they would want to.

I love learning and take many classes and workshops; I combine my knowledge, skills and ideas to come up with new ideas.  That may include cameras, computers, and inspiration from types of artwork.

I use fabrics, thread, machines, glue, paints, embroidery, computers, paper, EQ7, as well as synthetic and natural fibers.

Right now I’m passionate about teaching and quilting.  The spider web design made a huge impression on me.  I started making one and then found I couldn’t make them fast enough to keep up with all the ideas I had from that one design. I love sharing my spider webs with others, showing them how one thing lead to another and when you find something that clicks, I think you need to keep at it, maybe you call it a series? But see what adventure it takes you on.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an artist who uses fabric and thread as my medium instead of paper and paint….and a sewing machine instead of a brush.

The texture, color and prints of fabrics fascinate me and often give me inspiration for a new design.  I very seldom draw out a quilt plan, but let the fabrics and textures determine my next step.

While I work towards an idea I try to avoid any definite image of the completed piece, because the complex nature of fabric often reveals surprises that dictate unexpected changes of direction.

Most of my designs are organic.  They are influenced by my love of nature and all its wonders.

I like to work with color and movement in my pieces.  The bright colors I use express my positive outlook on life.

The texture of the fabrics is an important design element to me and in my work I use many different surface design techniques such as fabric dyeing, painting, printing, pleating and machine quilting and embroidery.

My desire has always been to create unique pieces and have lots of fun during the process.
